Approximate and Precise Location

Balancing Connection and Privacy

In the realm of location-based social networking, the interplay between connection and privacy is a delicate balance. Here at Waldo, our commitment to building a platform that simultaneously fosters connections and safeguards privacy stands at the forefront of our innovation.

The Waldo Approach to Location

Unlike some location-sharing services like Apple's Find My and Life360—which may feel overwhelmingly precise for anyone outside the immediate family—Waldo adopts a nuanced approach.

City-Level Location

Initially, Waldo focuses on sharing location at the city level. When users are placed on the map within a specific geo code, they are associated with a broader location rather than a pinpointed spot.

Introducing the "Precise" Filter

To further cater to user preferences, we've introduced a "precise" filter on the map tab. When activated, this allows users to manually set their exact location.

It's worth noting, however, that the location will remain static throughout the day, even if the user travels. That's a deliberate choice, as Waldo is not currently utilizing real-time GPS tracking.

The Future of Location with Waldo

As we continue to grow and introduce a mobile app with precise GPS location functionality, users will have even more control. Options to set an approximate location or to disable location altogether for specific periods will be available—all while continuing to enjoy other features like the residency calendar.

Learning from the Past

Location-based services present unique challenges. Early platforms like Dodgeball and Foursquare encountered issues with real-time location, leading to unexpected and sometimes uncomfortable social interactions. We understand that an overly precise location might deter users who prioritize security, such as celebrities or high-net-worth individuals.

That's why Waldo empowers users with the ability to control their privacy settings, like turning off 2nd-degree connections. Learn more about these settings here.

Your Feedback is Vital

As we tread the fine line between connection and privacy, your voice guides our journey. We welcome and encourage your feedback, knowing that it will help us refine our approach to location and enhance the Waldo experience for all users.

We're not just building a platform; we're nurturing a community where every user feels seen, yet secure. With careful consideration of location sharing, we're crafting an environment where connections thrive without sacrificing the personal boundaries that make each of us unique.
